For this December I will be reviewing drinks with the classic holiday flavor of peppermint. This is one of those flavors that have become so linked with the winter season that people use it's appearance as their holiday trigger. Each year I'm excited to see all the different ways it will be used. Peppermint is a flavor that can quickly become overpowering, but at the same time people are so afraid to use it that they underestimate how much to use and it can quickly become overpowered. For me peppermint brings memories of the holidays past and I use it to help me get in the holiday mood. When it comes to peppermint being used in foods or candy it is used mostly in things that are sweet and not really used i savory foods.
Trader Joe's Peppermint Pretzel Slims
This is one of the best peppermint products I have ever tried. The peppermint, white chocolate, and pretzels mix perfectly, and it's really hard not to eat the whole bag in one sitting. I would highly recommend these.Mrs. Fields Peppermint Sugar Cookie
All of the flavor in this cookie comes from the ground up candy canes that they smashed into this cookie before they cooked it. The texture of the cookie is not pleasant. It was very much like you were trying to just naw on the candy cane pieces directly and it kind of hurts your teeth. It would have been much better if they would have used peppermint extract or peppermint Flavored chips instead. For the quality of this cookie it was way over priced. There are many Miss Fields cookies that I like but this is not one of them. I would not buy it again.
Peeps Peppermint Bark
Really good, although they could have dialed up the peppermint slightly because of how overpowering the dark chocolate was that they used. The chocolate was bitter and a stronger peppermint taste would have helped to balance them out. I found these shopping at Target on Black Friday. I may buy them again if I'm snacky and they are right there, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get them.
Chocolate Storybook Peppermint Mocha Cotton Candy
On this one I got the peppermint flavor, but the chocolate was lost. There was some other weird flavor with the peppermint that I couldn't put my finger on, but it was not chocolate or coffee. It was just weird. The tub was a good size for the $5(ish) I paid. Would I get it again... not sure, but the place I found it at, Taste in the Flatirons Mall, had several other flavors that stood out more mostly just because they were so random.
Fun Sweets Candy Cane Cotton Candy
Many times when I try flavored cotton candy it doesn't taste like it is supposed to. This cotton candy did have a weak peppermint flavor to it, but the more you ate of it, the weaker the flavor got. It was still good as a cotton candy. It was part of a five pack holiday themed cotton candy set. I found the set at Walmart for $5, or $1 per tub. They're just kind of fun treats.
The Killer Brownie Company Signature Collection: Peppermint
I found these at a King Soopers when I was trying to find food to take to a work holiday function. I'm kind of mixed on this one. It did have a good taste, but one slice was too much for one serving. The product was super dry and it needed the peppermint cream, but that was also slightly dried out. I had was sorry that I hadn't gotten a drink to go with it. I thin I would buy these again based on the flavor, but I would cut them in half because of how overpowering and dry they are.
Hilton Denver Inverness: Peppermint Chocolate Torte
This was one of several desserts on a rather horrible buffet at a holiday party I was attending at the Hilton. The most I can say is that they did bring the peppermint to the table. The chocolate was just so overpowering and had a very bitter taste. It did not blend well with the peppermint. The dessert actually needed something to help cut the dense taste and texture of it. Tried it once and would not get again.
Trader Joe's Peppermint Mini Marshmallows
Normally vegan and gluten free are bad words that mean does not taste good. Truthfully, if I had noticed these before I bought them I wouldn't have gotten them. These did not have the mouth feel of a true marshmellow and did not melt in hot cocoa like one either. The only thing marshmallow about them was their shape. The peppermint flavor was super mellow to the point you had to question if it was there. Even with that it was hard to not eat the bag in one sitting. It wasn't that they were good exactly, but I think my brain was just trying to figure them out. Of the Trader Joe's items I tried this one was a bit disappointing.
Candy Cane Fudge
I found these at a small shop in Flatiron Crossing Mall. The main flavor was just white chocolate with a little peppermint that mostly came from the candy canes that had been crushed on top. It took me awhile to eat the small piece, because overall it was bland and boring.
Junior Mints: Peppermint Crunch
These are one of the holiday treats I look forward to each year. They have a nice strong taste and I can easily eat a whole box in one sitting if I'm not careful. These can be found at most stores, but I got mine at Five Below.
Sweet Chaos Drizzled Popcorn Peppermint Crunch
Not enough peppermint flavoring. It mostly just tasted like chocolate drizzled popcorn. They should have added peppermint extract to the chocolate to give it a boost. I found this at the Dollar Tree, so you don't really expect high quality from them.
Mile Hi Popcorn Candy Cane
This tasted like they tried to add some peppermint extract to their base kettle corn. It was OK, but they could have really dialed up on the flavoring. While eating it you really have to search for the peppermint flavor.
Candy Cane Canolli
This was actually surprisingly good. They found the right balance with the peppermint. It was the only good thing I had at The French Press. Just order this there and nothing else.
