Road Trip Food
I had to do a quick road trip to Texas to drop off some rabbits to a friend. At my age and health level, road trips don't happen that much, but when you have to get baby bunnies (12 weeks old) bunnies to another state flying is not the best option. The last road trip I had done was back in 2023 when I decided to drive down to Alamosa to walk for my graduation (it was my first Master level degree so I thought it was worth it). This trip was 3 days round trip and here is the food I ate along the way.
Day 1 was filled with little food. Just focused on driving. Stopped at a gas station in Raton, Colorado, and grabbed a "healthy" snack. These I actually ate over 2 days. I've had these Turkey Bites before and they are pretty good. I love beef jerky, but trying to find better options is always good.
When I stopped for the night in Clayton, New Mexico the guy at my hotel recommended a little place about a block and a half down the street called 87 Restaurant. It had classic American food. I ordered the catfish which came with fries and slaw. I would say that the volume to price was ok. The problem was how greasy the fish was. They really needed to dry the fish on paper towels or something. Just way too much grease. I actually could not finish my fish because of how greasy it was and I would not recommending this dish if you do not have a gallbladder. I also had a soda with dinner.
This was a gas station find. I know not a healthy option, but on a road trip you want carbs and sugar. I really enjoyed it. The chocolate was smooth, not bitter, and not overly sweet. It was also a great price of only $1.49. This was actually one of the best boxed hand pies I have ever had.
At the same gas station I also tried the Texas Pecan coffee. I really didn't get any of the pecan flavor, but it was a smooth coffee that wasn't burnt. I would buy this coffee again and wish I could find it in Colorado.
"Lunch" was actually grabbing a snack at Buc-ee's. Buc-ee's has a lot of good food, but most of it causes issues if you don't have a gallbladder ( those of you without one know what I mean). So I had to be extra careful what I got. The veggie cup was actually split between me and the rabbits I was transporting. On this trip I found it very hard to find veggies at gas stations and truck stops, let alone carrots. I had wanted to give them a treat since I knew they were stressed since this was their first big trip. Buc-ee's came through. The drink was a sweet tea. I had never tasted their sweet tea before. It was slightly watered down or weak when compared to other sweet teas and it was also not super sugary. A lot of sweet teas coat your teeth in sugar, but theirs didn't. It wasn't bad, but they have other much better drinks to get.
Dinner was in my final destination, Childress. I had met up with my two best friends and we decided to get some Texas BBQ. The closest place was Top Notch Texas BBQ. The place was busy, but we didn't have to wait for a table. Both I and one of my friends decided to try their sampler plate. Their BBQ didn't come with any sauce and was a little dry. I also found a bone in the pulled pork, so I would recommend chewing softly on it. The okra was actually the best part of the meal. The BBQ was average. I don't know if I would recommend this place. I know next time I'm in town there are lots of other places to try.
While there one of my friends wanted to try the peace cobbler. When I think of Texas, peach anything isn't what comes to mind but peach seems to be a popular flavor there. It was ok.
When we got back to the hotel my friends had brought something for me to try. My friend mixed the decadent Saint Hard Blackcurrent with a sparkling water/club soda. The flavor totally threw me off. I was expecting something cherry like, but it reminded me more of a bubble gum flavor. It was really good. My friend said that she has only been able to find this in Texas, but I think I will keep my eye out for it.
The next day breakfast at the Super 8 hotel was a hot breakfast. Yah for hot breakfast. I was super amused by Texas shaped waffle. After I saw one of my friends get one, I had to as well. The rest of my meal I focused on protein in the hopes it would help to keep me full while on the road. I also grabbed a cup of coffee to go.
Then once I was on the road again I ended up making a mistake and missed the turn off for 87 (they really need to mark the split better). I only figured out the mistake when I saw the Welcome to Oklahoma sign. At this point I found the closest gas station/truck stop that looked busy. I'm not a fan of Subway, but besides gas station food this was the only option they had. I had stopped eating at the for a few years due to how dirty the locations in Colorado are plus they had super hiked up their prices for a mediocre product. This wrap, turkey bacon, was ok, but overpriced for the size. I also didn't get the full scoop of avocado since the guy was just scrapping the tub and didn't want to get another tube out.
Then after a final stretch of basic nothingness I hit a gas station in La Junta where I grabbed a high protein snack.
The only food I was missing was my last snack of the trip. It was super late and a storm was moving in, so I didn't take the time to take a picture. The last snack was a large diet soda and an order of potato wedges from the Loves truck stop just north of Colorado Springs.
Also I did drink along the way, but didn't include pictures of that unless it was with a meal/snack. I had taken bottled water with me and diet soda. Also I did grab a plum tea from Cracker Barrel in Colorado Springs on my way down.
I would say that my food experiences on the trip was ok. I didn't get to try all of the food I would have liked to, but I did not want to upset my stomach. Traveling with medical/health issues can be a challenge, but I feel that I did pretty good on this trip. No bad attacks, no food poisoning, and no major messes. So overall I would say that I had a successful food adventure.
